tahwharanui regional park

DURATION: Various

Tawharanui Regional Park is a popular beach destination for families, surfers and sun-lovers but it is also a protected nature reserve with several walks in and around the peninsula.  So it's really a case of take your pick based on how long you want to walk for, as all walks come complete with sea views and stunning New Zealand scenery.

Ecology Trail
2 HOURS RETURN
This trail follows the yellow markers from the Sanctuary Hut at Anchor Bay.  It's a great little track that gives you a taste of a bit of everything...sea views, native bush, farm land, streams and wetlands.  Plenty of amazing photo opportunities and fun family time trying to spot the native birds in the bush.

North/South Coast Tracks
4 HOURS RETURN
This is a walk for the energetic. You can start at either the Lagoon car park or at Sanctuary Hut at Anchor Bay. Follow the white markers along the track, which winds up either at the northern or southern coasts (depending on where you begin) and heads out to Tokatū Point at the end of the peninsula. You will be rewarded with stunning views of neighbouring islands.

West End Track
3 HOURS RETURN
Follow the blue markers starting at Sanctuary Hut at Anchor Bay and head up the hills towards the pest- proof fence at the western end of the park for unique views of the coastline and nearby islands.

Maori Bay Coast Walk
4 HOURS RETURN
From the Lagoon car park wander around the south coast over rocks to Māori Bay (access from mid to low tide only). At Māori Bay join the SouthCoast Track for the return trip to theLagoon carpark.

Or you can do what we often do and mix the tracks up, letting the mood take us on the day.  We often don't know where we are heading but we know that as long as you can see markers, you'll always make it back.  The fun is in the island spotting, bird naming and sun-drenched views.  It is safe to say there is never a bad day to be at Tahwaranui.
