Omanawanui - Kura Loop Walk, Whatipu
OMANAWANUI - KURA Loop Tracks
DURATION: Just a little over 3hrs
This track is probably one of my absolute favourites. It really encompasses a bit of everything... views, climbs, waterfalls, stream crossings, chain climbing and did I mention views?
You make your way towards Huia and keep following the road all the way through to Whatipu beach carpark. We've done this track quite a few times and have started it from either way - but the weather can sometimes help make the decision for you as the Kura track is under bush cover and a lot of Omanawanui track is exposed but they're both great tracks either way.
Regardless of which way you start you will experience some good, steady hill climbs and on Omanawanui you will be awarded with some of the most beautiful views in the Waitakeres. It's not really for the faint-hearted but in saying that, I have taken people on this walk who aren't too used to hiking and whilst they may have grumbled here and there, the satisfaction of completing it as well as the magnificent views got them through.
Also note that if you start the loop by going on the Omanawanui track first, when you get to the end of it to cross the road to connect with the Kura track, the sign actually says Puriri Ridge track, so head along here and the Kura track is about 15 mins along on the left.
Otherwise, have an amazing time.
